The reading specialist who sees your child’s heart first.
Behind Oak & Sparrow is one deeply caring person — certified in the method, devoted to the child, and called to this work.
Hi, I’m Michelle. For as long as I can remember, I’ve been drawn to the children other people had quietly given up on — the ones labeled “behind,” the ones who’d learned to believe they just weren’t smart. I’ve never believed that for a second. I’ve seen too many of them bloom.
I’m a certified Orton-Gillingham reading specialist, trained in the structured-literacy approach that decades of research confirm is the most effective way to teach reading — especially for children with dyslexia. That certification matters. But it’s only half of what I bring to the table.
Why I do this
The truth is, this is a calling for me. As a Christian, I believe each child sitting across from me was created on purpose, with gifts the world needs — and that reading struggles are never the measure of their worth. That conviction is the engine behind the patience, the flexibility, and the sometimes-stubborn hope I bring to every single session.
I pour into these kids the way I’d want someone to pour into my own: sacrificially, attentively, and with a deep desire to see not just better reading scores, but stronger, kinder, more courageous little people. Character and competence grow together here.
How I work with children
I have a gift — and I say that humbly — for building trust quickly. Kids who walk in with their arms crossed and their walls up tend to soften fast, because they can tell I’m genuinely for them. I study how each child learns: what lights them up, where they shut down, which emotional blocks are tangled up with the academic ones. Then I adapt, often in the moment, to meet them exactly where they are.
My favorite thing in the world? When a child who used to dread reading starts volunteering to do the work — reaching for the next word, the next page, the next challenge — simply because they finally feel safe and excited to try. That’s when I know the wall has come down. That’s the whole reason I do this.
The heart behind the help
A calling, not a business
Michelle is a Christian who believes every child is made with purpose and worth. Tutoring isn’t a transaction to her — it’s a way of pouring sacrificial love and patience into a child who needs to be believed in.
Character alongside competence
Reading skills matter, and so does who a child is becoming. Perseverance, courage, kindness, and self-belief are woven into every session — because confident readers are built on confident hearts.
Quick, genuine trust
Michelle has a gift for connecting with children fast. Kids who arrive guarded soon relax — and many begin volunteering to do their work, simply because they feel safe, capable, and excited.
Whatever your family’s background or beliefs, you and your child are deeply welcome here. My faith shapes how I love and serve — it never becomes a condition of the care your child receives.
